VPN vs Tor
Tor distributes trust across volunteer relays; a VPN concentrates trust in one provider. Neither replaces the other.
Tor’s model
The Tor network sends traffic through multiple relays so no single relay sees both who you are and what you ultimately fetch (with important caveats). It is slower, sometimes blocked, and optimized for anonymity research and activism—not HD streaming.
VPN’s model
A VPN optimizes for encrypted access and IP substitution with usable speed. You trust one operator’s exits and policies. Better for everyday privacy against local networks and ISPs; weaker against global passive adversaries who can watch both ends.
Combining them
“VPN then Tor” or “Tor then VPN” changes who sees what; each order has tradeoffs and failure modes. Most people need one clear tool used well, not a stack they misunderstand.
